Mr. Porter’s Interview with Max Greenfield
Written by on April 24th, 2013
After just two seasons of Fox’s sitcom New Girl, Mr Max Greenfield has become something of a comedy icon. That’s because his character, Schmidt, is such a ridiculous, over-the-top, self-important, loveable loser – a perfect foil to the wide-eyed optimism of his roommate Jess, played so indelibly by Ms Zooey Deschanel. As Schmidt’s popularity has risen, thanks, in part, to several viral videos Mr Greenfield made, including one of Schmidt’s dating profile (his perfect match? Himself) and another where he teaches a spinning class to an empty room with the energy of a banshee, so has his red carpet quotient.

This year, after swooning over a certain designer in a guest-edited entry for Ms Gwyneth Paltrow’s website, Goop (Ms Paltrow tweeted about how big a fan she was of his character), Mr Greenfield finally got his wish: the designer sent him a tuxedo to wear at the Golden Globes, where Mr Greenfield was nominated for his role on New Girl.

“I will never own a nicer piece of clothing in all of my life,” says Mr Greenfield, who grew up in Westchester, New York, and now lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Ms Tess Sanchez, a casting director, and their daughter, Lilly. “You feel like a different man. That thing fits you in a way that you think – maybe I could kick some ass in this thing. Sometimes I just wear it around the house. I’m not proud of it, but every once in a while I’ll just put it on and say, ‘Honey, take a look at me in this thing.’”

You’ve done an incredible job of making Schmidt “live” off television screens. Was that always on the cards?
Well, that’s what we wanted to do. We’ve turned it into kind of a performance piece. I fully understand the joke of Schmidt and I had some outside ideas I wanted to play with. That’s how the spinning class video happened. It was, “Look, I know where I live on this, and what my position is and if it continues to gain momentum and success I’m going to be Kramer from Seinfeld.” Definitely of my co-stars, my character is certainly the most showy. Rather than going, “No I’m not like him”, or “I’m not going to do that”, I fully embraced it. I said, “Let’s go at it 100%.” The idea is to let people know that you are so in on the joke that you maybe supersede the pigeonhole of it all.

Max Greenfield not worried about being typecast
Written by on April 15th, 2013

Max Greenfield, who’s been nominated for an Emmy and a Golden Globe for his role as Schmidt on the Fox comedy “New Girl,” says he isn’t worried about being typecast.

The idea makes him laugh.

“I don’t think anybody was ever gonna put me in like ‘Winter’s Bone’ anyway,” the 32-year-old actor said in a recent interview. “You know what I mean? I don’t think like if they were making a very dramatic, serious movie, they were gonna think, ‘You know, I really like Max Greenfield, but Schmidt is just … it’s too much of a thing to put him in that movie.’”

He took the bit further.

“I don’t think they’re trying to put me in ‘Saving Private Ryan. ‘We’re looking for Ryan. (Pauses.) Is that Schmidt?’” he said. “I’m fine. I’m getting to do everything I want to do on this show.”

“New Girl” stars Zooey Deschanel as a young woman with three male roommates, played by Greenfield, Jake Johnson and Lamorne Morris.

Schmidt is a vain, oversexed ladies man with obsessive-compulsive disorder. He makes frequent references to his Jewish heritage. The character could be unlikable, but Greenfield’s portrayal of Schmidt makes many viewers root for him.

Max Greenfield Shares His 3 Rules for Looking Sharp
Written by on April 15th, 2013

Max Greenfield fans can tell you his New Girl character Schmidt takes fashion very seriously. And while Greenfield may not own driving moccasins or a sharkskin laptop sleeve like his fictional counterpart, we found out he’s definitely a fan of looking put together when we recently caught up with him at a class he taught at Soul Cycle in West Hollywood.

Indeed, he looked particularly dapper at the 2013 Golden Globes—a fact he attributes to his sharp Tom Ford tuxedo.

“Your posture changes,” he says about his designer award show look. “Everything about you becomes different and you go, ‘I forgot that I’m a man.’ And then you’re reminded once you put on a tuxedo like that. Tom Ford reminds you that you’re a man.”

Just how much does Greenfield love a good-fitting suit? He’s gunning to team up with a designer.

“Man oh man, what I’d give to be an ambassador to Tom Ford,” he dished. “Man oh man, would I love to be the ambassador to, I mean, forget Tom Ford, just the ambassador to anything. I’m looking to be the ambassador to some sort of male fashion designer.”
